DVP RD2D Overview

The DVP RD2D is a compact two-stage high-vacuum pump developed specifically for refrigeration and air-conditioning service applications.

Its two pumping stages operate in series, allowing the RD2D to achieve a significantly lower final pressure than a comparable single-stage service pump.

The pump provides 1.8 m³/h at 50Hz and 2 m³/h at 60Hz, with a stated ultimate pressure of less than 0.5 mbar absolute.

The industrial monoblock design has the rotor mounted directly on the motor shaft. This reduces the number of transmission components and helps keep the pump compact and lightweight.

Lightweight alloys are used throughout the construction, making the RD2D suitable for portable service work, restricted installation spaces and mobile refrigeration equipment.

The pump must still be installed or operated where sufficient ventilation is available around the motor and pump body.

Why Refrigeration Systems Must Be Evacuated

Evacuating a refrigeration or air-conditioning system removes air, moisture and other non-condensable gases before the refrigerant is introduced.

Moisture left inside the circuit can freeze at expansion devices, react with refrigerant and oil, contribute to acid formation and reduce long-term system reliability.

Non-condensable gases can increase operating pressures, reduce heat-transfer efficiency and place additional load on the compressor.

The RD2D provides the deep vacuum needed to support proper system dehydration and preparation before charging.

Key RD2D Features

Two-Stage Vacuum Performance

Two pumping stages connected in series help the RD2D achieve a stated ultimate pressure of less than 0.5 mbar absolute.

Compact Monoblock Design

The rotor is mounted directly on the motor shaft, reducing the overall size and number of drive components.

Lightweight and Portable

Lightweight alloy construction and an integral transport handle make the pump suitable for mobile service work.

Oil Check Valve

The oil check valve helps reduce reverse oil movement towards the connected refrigeration circuit when the pump stops.

How the Two-Stage Design Works

The RD2D uses two rotary vane pumping sections connected in series.

The first stage removes most of the air from the refrigeration circuit and reduces the pressure substantially below atmospheric pressure.

The second stage receives the exhaust from the first stage and compresses the remaining gas further before discharging it from the pump.

This two-stage arrangement allows the RD2D to achieve deeper vacuum than a comparable single-stage refrigeration service pump.

Oil Check Valve Protection

When an oil-lubricated vacuum pump stops while connected to an evacuated system, pressure differences can encourage oil or oil vapour to move back towards the vacuum line.

The RD2D oil check valve helps reduce reverse oil movement towards the connected refrigeration or air-conditioning circuit.

Good service practice should still include correct isolation of the system and use of appropriate hoses, valves and manifolds.

Portable Refrigeration Service Pump

The RD2D is designed to be compact enough for mobile service work and installation on portable refrigeration equipment.

Its lightweight alloy construction reduces handling weight, while the transport handle makes the pump easier to carry between service locations.

Shock mounts help reduce transmitted vibration when the pump is placed on a workshop floor, bench or mobile service unit.

The pump should remain upright during operation and be positioned where cooling airflow is not restricted.

Using the RD2D Effectively

The effective evacuation speed at the refrigeration system depends on more than the nominal capacity of the pump.

Long or narrow hoses, restrictive manifold passages, valve-core restrictions and leaks can significantly reduce the pumping speed reaching the system.

Using short, correctly sized vacuum hoses and removing unnecessary restrictions can help reduce evacuation time.

A suitable vacuum gauge should be connected at the system rather than relying solely on the pump connection or manifold gauge.

The system should also be isolated and monitored after evacuation to help identify moisture release or leakage.

Vacuum Pump Oil and Maintenance

Oil condition is important to the ultimate pressure and reliability of the RD2D.

The oil lubricates the pumping mechanism, helps seal internal clearances and transfers heat away from the rotary vane assembly.

Moisture, refrigerant, dirt or degraded oil can reduce pumping performance and prevent the pump from reaching its expected final pressure.

Oil should be checked regularly and changed according to use, contamination level and the maintenance instructions.

Vacuum Pumps UK and our sister company, VacAir Superstore, can provide oil, seals, gaskets, service parts and workshop support for the DVP RD2D.

Is the RD2D the Correct Refrigeration Pump?

Small System Volume

The compact 1.8 m³/h pumping speed is best suited to relatively small refrigeration and air-conditioning circuits.

Portable Service Work

The lightweight design and transport handle make the RD2D suitable for engineers carrying a pump between service locations.

Deep Evacuation

The two-stage construction provides deeper vacuum than a typical single-stage service pump.

Larger Systems

Larger refrigeration circuits or faster evacuation requirements may need a pump with greater nominal pumping capacity.

Need Help Selecting a Refrigeration Vacuum Pump?

The required pumping speed depends on the system volume, evacuation target, hose arrangement, service environment and desired pump-down time.

Send us details of the refrigeration or air-conditioning system and we will advise whether the compact DVP RD2D is suitable.
