Vacuum Solutions for CNC Woodworking Machines

Vacuum hold-down systems are used across CNC woodworking routers, nesting lines, pod and rail machines, vacuum tables and panel processing equipment. Reliable vacuum performance is critical to holding force, machining accuracy, tool life, material usage and production output.

Vacuum Pumps UK provides factory-backed advice, new DVP vacuum pumps, replacement pumps, genuine spare parts and service support for CNC woodworking machines.

Where Vacuum is Used in CNC Woodworking

Vacuum Bed Hold Down

The vacuum pump removes air beneath the sheet or component, creating holding force across the CNC bed while cutting, drilling or routing takes place.

Spoil Board Systems

Porous spoil boards allow vacuum to pull through the board surface and hold MDF, plywood, chipboard and other panel materials during nesting.

Pod & Rail Machines

Vacuum pods hold doors, panels and shaped components securely while edges, hinge pockets and detailed profiles are machined.

Machine Throughput

Correct pump sizing helps maintain reliable holding force, reduce part movement and support consistent CNC production cycles.

Typical CNC Woodworking Vacuum Applications

Marine & Specialist Panels

Vacuum hold-down technology is also used for shaped interiors, lightweight panels, decorative boards and specialist woodworking components.

Common Vacuum Problems on CNC Woodworking Machines

A CNC woodworking vacuum fault can affect holding force, cutting accuracy, tool life, material waste and machine output. Reduced performance is often caused by worn pumps, carbon vane wear, blocked filters, leaking pipework, damaged spoil boards, open zones, poor sealing or a pump that is no longer suitable for the machine duty.

Poor Holding Force

If the pump cannot maintain enough air flow and vacuum level, boards can move during machining and finished parts may be inaccurate.

Part Movement During Cutting

Low vacuum can allow smaller parts, narrow strips or porous boards to move as the cutter passes through the material.

Worn Carbon Vanes

Dry running vane pumps used on CNC routers can lose performance as carbon vanes wear, especially on machines running long shifts.

High Maintenance Costs

Repeated vane replacement, servicing and pump repairs can make older dry vane installations expensive over the life of the CNC machine.

Recommended DVP Vacuum Pumps for CNC Woodworking

CNC woodworking vacuum systems often require high air flow to overcome leakage through spoil boards, porous timber-based panels and open vacuum zones. DVP dry running vane pumps are suitable for smaller systems, while DVP claw vacuum pumps are often a better long-term option for larger CNC woodworking vacuum bed applications.

Replacing a Dry Vane CNC Vacuum Pump with a Claw Pump

Many CNC woodworking machines are fitted with dry running rotary vane vacuum pumps. These pumps are proven and widely used, but larger dry vane pumps can become expensive to maintain because the carbon vanes are a normal wear component.

DVP dry running vane pumps are available up to around 140 m³/h. For larger CNC vacuum bed applications, where a machine may previously have used a large dry vane pump such as a Becker VTLF 2.250 class pump, the DVP VB315 claw vacuum pump can be considered as a modern replacement option.

A claw pump has no carbon vanes wearing against the cylinder. Routine servicing is therefore much lower, usually centred around periodic gearbox oil changes and general inspection. Over a longer working period, reduced vane replacement, reduced service labour and less downtime can make the initial investment easier to justify for busy CNC woodworking production environments.

DVP Replacement Vacuum Pumps for CNC Woodworking

Many woodworking CNC machines are originally fitted with Becker, Busch, Rietschle or other dry running vacuum pumps. Vacuum Pumps UK can recommend suitable DVP replacement pumps by comparing the existing pump model, air flow, vacuum level, duty cycle, pipework, electrical supply and available installation space.

The examples below show typical DVP dry-running vane, claw and side channel options for common CNC woodworking vacuum pump installations. Final pump selection should always be confirmed against the existing pump model, vacuum table size, material being machined, spoil board condition, leakage rate, duty cycle and available installation space. Some larger CNC woodworking machines may use two vacuum pumps to provide the required holding performance across a larger bed area.

Existing Pump / Application Typical Capacity Typical DVP Option Typical CNC Use
Becker KVT 3.80 Up to approx. 80 m³/h DVP SC80 Compact CNC routers, pod systems and smaller vacuum tables requiring a dry-running rotary vane vacuum pump.
Becker KVT 3.100 Up to approx. 100 m³/h DVP SC100 CNC routers, vacuum tables and pod systems where a compact dry-running vane pump is required.
Becker KVT 3.140 Up to approx. 140 m³/h DVP SC140 Larger CNC routers, pod systems and vacuum tables requiring dry-running vane technology. Two pumps may be used on larger beds where additional vacuum capacity is needed.
Becker VTLF 2.250 Approx. 250 m³/h DVP VB315 Larger CNC vacuum beds and nesting machines.
Side channel blowers for porous materials 55 – 2650 m³/h
60 – 660 m³/h
TSL Single Stage
TDL Double Stage
CNC vacuum beds processing MDF, chipboard and other porous materials where high airflow is required. TSL single-stage blowers suit high-volume airflow duties, while TDL double-stage blowers can be considered where a higher vacuum level is required.

If you are unsure which vacuum pump is fitted to your CNC woodworking machine, send us the machine model, pump nameplate or a photo of the existing pump and our engineers can advise on a suitable replacement.

CNC Woodworking Vacuum Pump FAQs

What does the vacuum pump do on a CNC woodworking machine?

The vacuum pump removes air from the vacuum bed, pods or table surface to create a pressure difference that holds the board or component in position. Stable vacuum helps prevent material movement during routing, drilling, profiling and nesting operations.

Why does my CNC router lose vacuum holding force?

Common causes include worn carbon vanes, blocked filters, leaking pipework, damaged seals, poor spoil board condition, open vacuum zones, porous material, poor board coverage or a pump that is no longer producing the required air flow.

Can a claw vacuum pump replace a large dry vane pump on a CNC machine?

In many larger CNC woodworking applications, yes. A claw pump can often be considered where the existing dry vane pump has become expensive to maintain or where regular carbon vane replacement is creating downtime and ongoing cost. Final selection should always be checked against the machine duty and required air flow.

Is the DVP VB315 suitable as a replacement for a Becker VTLF 2.250?

The DVP VB315 claw vacuum pump can be considered as a replacement option for many larger dry vane CNC woodworking vacuum systems, including applications where a Becker VTLF 2.250 class pump has been used. The existing pump, pipework, duty cycle, electrical supply and installation space should be checked before confirming the replacement.

What information do you need to recommend a replacement CNC vacuum pump?

Useful information includes the CNC machine manufacturer, machine model, bed size, vacuum zones, existing pump model, pump nameplate details, material being machined, operating hours and photographs of the current installation.
